چکیده

LOW-TEMPERATURE CARBURIZATION is a gaseous carburization process performed at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures where the kinetics of substitutional diffusion are very slow. Low-temperature carburization hardens the surface of austenitic stainless steels through the diffusion of interstitial carbon, without the formation of carbides. The surface must be activated, by modification and removal of the naturally occurring chromia layer, for the process to work. The process results in a hardened diffusional case on the surface, typically 20 to 35 mm thick, with carbon content at the surface in excess of 10 at.%. The process is conformal and can be applied to finished components without change in dimension. Property enhancements include:

Characterization of Austenitic Stainless Steels Deformed at Elevated Temperature

Highly alloyed austenitic stainless steels are promising candidates to replace more expensive nickel-based alloys within the energy-producing industry. The present study investigates the deformation mechanisms by microstructural characterization, mechanical properties and stress–strain response of three commercial austenitic stainless steels and two commercial nickel-based alloys using uniaxial...

The combined effect of molybdenum and nitrogen on the fatigued microstructure of 316 type austenitic stainless steel

Introduction The mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steels, including the low cyclic fatigue behavior have been a subject of numerous studies [1-8]. Nitrogen addition, in general, increases the fatigue strength by decreasing the stacking fault energy of austenitic stainless steels [6]. The stacking fault energy has a strong influence on the cross slip difficulty, thus it affects the ...

High-Temperature Behaviour of Austenitic Alloys -Influence of Temperature and Strain Rate on Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Development

The global increase in energy consumption and the global warming from greenhouse gas emission creates the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Biomass power plants with higher efficiency could generate more energy but also reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, e.g. CO2. Biomass is the largest global contributor to renewable energy and offers no net contribution o...

Effect of plastic deformation on anelastic mechanical losses in multicomponent substitutional austenitic alloys

Complex two-component peak of anelastic mechanical losses was observed in multicomponent substitutional austenitic alloys after prior plastic deformation. In AISI 316L, AISI 316LN, AISI 310 and AISI 304 austenitic stainless steels, this peak is situated in the wide range of temperature from 200 to 400K. Characteristics of the observed peak for different thermo-mechanical treatments were studied...
